ABOUT PASO FINOS

After surviving a life threatening illness, having previously owned horses, and being at the mid century mark in life, I wanted to do something I really enjoyed. After a 20-year hiatus from the Equine world, I decided to get back into horses while I was still young enough to enjoy the experience.

A little history.....In 1994, I had an 8" stainless steel plate inserted in my back to stabilize my spine that was damaged after an unfortunate incident while I was in the hospital for a minor operation. First, I had an 8" stainless steel plate put in my back to stabilize my spine, then 3 months later had to have it removed in an emergency procedure. Suffice to say my back is a mess. After substantial recovery from my two major surgeries, I bought a crossbreed gelding quarter horse for me and a crossbred mare for my wife. My wife's crossbred was a half quarter horse and half Paso Fino. It was my good fortune that my wife's horse, the "mare," was half Paso Fino. My horse was a larger Quarter/Thoroughbred Cross, clumsy, lazy, and as energetic as a box of rocks. My big horse rode like a truck without springs over a pothole riddled country road. My wife's half Paso road like a limo on a new blacktop highway. It was my total infatuation with my wife's half Paso that got me wondering,  "What is a Paso Fino and how can I get one?"

I surmised, if a half Paso Fino is this nice, what would a full Paso Fino be like? Well, that was about 100 horses ago, and I still have my first one. I guess I really like Pasos!

Now, I'm sure you love your horse, and I'm happy for you. I'm not saying the Paso Fino is for everyone, but they definitely are for me. Actually, they are for everyone even though everyone doesn't yet know it. Ok, now I said it, if you like trails and shows "You need a Paso."

Consider this, if you can't handle the gait of a standard Western mount because of back problems, or you are slightly past puberty, but still want to enjoy horses, you should consider a Paso Fino. They are extremely hardy, bright, loving, energetic and a fabulous ride. My Paso is probably a little smaller than your Western steed, but is just as sturdy, maybe even more so. The Paso hoofs are extremely tough and meant for walking over rocky mountains. The personality of a Paso is like that of a large lap dog. And when your horse is telling you, "Let's stop for a rest!" My Paso is saying, "I'm just getting warmed up, let's go!" And most importantly, when your spine is telling you, "I can't take anymore!" Mine is saying, "This is like sitting on an easy chair. Let's keep on rocking!"

When you are posting, I am sitting. When your back is aching the day after, I'm ready for another ride. If you already have a Paso, then as you know, I'm speaking to the choir. If you don't yet know about Pasos, hop on board for the ride of your life.
